Quick-Fire Zines 



My collection of Quick-Fire zines are a glimpse into my working brain. Initiating each project with a pamphlet of visual ideas, these analogue brain dumps were a handy habit I picked up in first year of Uni. The design of a publication comes naturally and I learnt to use the sequence and rhythm of spreads to tackle the basis of the design problem - meaning, audience, imagery, type, solution ...


01 _ No Damsel.

The most extensive quick-fire zine, ‘No Damsel’ was inspired by feminist punk zines and initiated a project to challanged the damsel in distress trope.
 The ‘damsel-in-distress’ narrative device has been played with in all means of visual culture. Adapting from literature to film it places the female role in a position of peril who needs to be saved by an almighty hero. The representation of women in cinema is undoubtably embedded in stereotypes. Contemporary cinema tries to shake the trope, but has its damaging effects been sitting pretty for too long?







02 _ I’m coming to an end.

This speedy but playful brief asked us to explore visual data in design. Initiating the project with a fun exercise we were asked to pick an object ‘no bigger than your palm’ to extract data and translate it into a visual narrative. I reached for my well used role of electrical tape - an unusual but trustworthy object you will always find deep in my art kit. The front cover shows an empty role...and the back a new unwrapped one.   




03 _ Project Pulp ‘Stripping Wallpaper’ #1

Exploring the rawest and authentic form of publishing - speech.  Manipulating the interior and architectural magazine Wallpaper and it’s slogan ‘The stuff that surrounds us’ to play with visualising the transient nature of conversation. This project was developed in the midst of a covid lockdown when we were all craving exactly that; face-to-face natters. The black paper was used as a chalkboard with each conversation response being rubbed off before the next.  







04 _ Project Pulp ‘Edit, Undo’ #2

Transient Conversations gone digital - it’s hard to ‘edit, undo’ real conversation.This little zine had no staples or binding ... the pages can be swopped and reshuffled.
